The Difference between Parked, Add-on, and Sub-domains

We, the website and blog-owners, especially those who are hosting their website rather than have one on hosting-ready services such as Google's Blogger, or WordPress.com, come across these words almost daily in our lives: parked domains, add-on domains, and sub-domains. So what are actually these 'things'...?

Let me explain you... (It's really simple).

Sub-domain Domains:
A sub-domain is a second website with it's own unique content, and really different from the main website on which it is hosted. But there is no new domain name in it. Instead you use an existing domain name which you own and change the www to something else. The sub-domain looks in this way: answers.thewebsa.ga, forums.mysite.com or accounts.google.com.

Add-on Domains:
An add-on domain is a second website, with its own unique content. This type of domain does require you to register the new domain name before you can host it. So, if you want to host www.otherdomain.com, this is the solution.

Parked Domains:
A parked domain is NOT a unique website. Instead, it is a masked forward to the primary domain name of your cPanel account, much like a website alias. Parked domains are commonly used when:

  • You need a place to park a domain for which you do not have a website

  • You have more than one domain that should lead to your primary domain

  • You have common misspellings of your domain name that you have registered
